The Sun enters Capricorn each year on Winter Solstice - the longest night of the year. This is the time that the ending or “death” of the old calendar year is celebrated - a time to be quiet and still, to honor the forthcoming return of the Sun God. For some religious faiths, the lighting of the candles is a spiritual practice symbolizing a new hope and a new beginning. From the darkest day of the year, you my dear Capricorn friend have the RESPONSIBILITY to share the light and led us on the way to greatness.
To most astrologers, Capricorn is symbolized by the mountain goat. Climbing the highest mountain alone and solitary, its’ persistence is incomparable. Big rocks to move, slippery hillsides where he must watch his footings, or lack of green grass to lay the tired body down on, cannot stop him until he reaches his objectives. Yes, Capricorn friend, you are capable of great strength and have strong sense of purpose. How you use that strength and what purpose you make use of it, is something you need to examine.
In Greek mythology, the symbol of Capricorn is equated with Amalthea, the half-goat, half-nymph, who breastfed Zeus when his mother Rhea hid him from his irate father, Cronus, on the island of Crete. As a reward for the service she provided to the future king of the gods, Amalthea became one of the constellations in the heavens. She is also a sister of Pan, who was known to be addicted to sexual promiscuity.
In some tarot decks, Capricorn is represented by either Pan or the Devil. Who is this creature? To some, he is the opposite of God. He represents temptations of worldly matters: big corporations, honors and fame, sexual drives, or the importance of outward appearances. He uses resourcefulness to achieve his goals. He also represents the “ignorance of love, or false image of truth”. But, wait a minute… isn’t everything God’s creation? Somehow, sometime ago, this patient, determined, hard-working goat was transformed through changes in church dogma into an image of the Devil.
Here are some thoughts to ponder, Capricorn friend. On so many occasions, you have been accused of being nicer to others out in the world, than to those in your own family. “The street angel and house devil,” you are called by many. Perhaps this is where the keyword for Capricorn “I use” needs to be examined. There’s a difference between “How can I use this” and “ How can this be of use to everyone”.
As one who has experienced obstacles and overcome them successfully, you have wisdom to share, my dear Capricorn friend. Do share your wisdom humbly and with lightness and laughter - for it’s in this lightness and laughter that you’ll experience your true greatness.
Have a Blessed Birthday! Keep up the great work, and prepare for 2008.
